Ayahuasca
Psychedelic
A concoction made of two or more plants that contain at least an MAOI and DMT, the combination of which allows the DMT to work orally. Typically associated to south american cultures. Also, sometimes approximated synthetically by taking an external MAOI with extracted DMT. Causes intense, spiritually orientated hallucinogenic experiences.

Before you dose
Dose
No structured dose data for this substance in our sources. Treat anything you read elsewhere with caution - unknown potency is the single biggest risk with novel substances.
Expected effects
- Vivid visuals and altered consciousness
- Profound introspection and emotional release
- Sense of connection
- Purging (vomiting)
Possible side effects
- Intense nausea and vomiting
- Anxiety and fear
- Raised heart rate and blood pressure
- Hypertensive crisis with tyramine-heavy foods or certain medicines
- Dangerous with SSRIs, MAOIs, stimulants and many prescriptions
- Dehydration from prolonged purging
Known toxicity
- LD50 is around 50 times a regular dose
Harm reduction
- Set and setting shape a psychedelic experience more than the dose does. Plan the room, the music, the company and the exit before you take anything.
- Have a sober person present, or at minimum someone who knows what you have taken and can be called.
- Do not redose to 'make it stronger'. Tolerance to psychedelics develops within an hour, so a redose mostly extends the experience and increases the risk of a difficult one.
- Avoid combinations with lithium (seizure risk) and tramadol, and be extremely careful with cannabis, which sharply intensifies the experience.
- People with a personal or family history of psychosis, schizophrenia or bipolar disorder should not use psychedelics - this is the clearest contraindication in the literature.
- Never drive, cycle or operate machinery, and do not take psychedelics in public places or around crowds you cannot leave.
- Physically: expect dilated pupils, raised heart rate and reduced appetite. These are normal. Chest pain, fainting or seizure activity is not - get help.
- Frequency matters: repeated use within days has sharply diminishing returns and increases the risk of persistent visual disturbances.
