Before you dose

⚠This substance's dose is not reliably weight-scaled - the ranges shown are population figures. Sensitivity varies far more between people than body mass explains.

Dose

No structured dose data for this substance in our sources. Treat anything you read elsewhere with caution - unknown potency is the single biggest risk with novel substances.

Expected effects

  • Immediate rush of warmth and euphoria (1-3 minutes)
  • Muscle relaxation (including smooth muscle)
  • Intensified physical sensation
  • Sense of time slowing

Possible side effects

  • Headache
  • Dizziness and fainting
  • Marked drop in blood pressure
  • Vision changes - reported permanent damage with heavy use
  • Methaemoglobinaemia if swallowed - a medical emergency
  • Dangerous with erectile-dysfunction medication

Harm reduction

  • Never swallow it. That is a medical emergency, not a stronger high.
  • Do not combine with sildenafil, tadalafil or blood-pressure medication - the blood pressure drop can be catastrophic.
  • Skip it if you have glaucoma, heart disease or anaemia.
  • Use in a ventilated space; the headache afterwards is usually from the vapour itself.
  • Reported permanent vision changes with heavy use are a reason to keep frequency low.
  • Poppers (alkyl nitrites) must never be swallowed - that causes methaemoglobinaemia, which is a medical emergency.
  • Do not combine poppers with erectile-dysfunction medication (sildenafil, tadalafil) or with blood-pressure medication: the drop in blood pressure can be catastrophic.
  • Avoid poppers if you have glaucoma, anaemia or heart problems, and be aware of reported cases of permanent vision loss with heavy use.
  • Nitrous oxide must only be inhaled from a balloon, never straight from a dispenser - the pressure and cold cause lung injury and frostbite.
  • Frequent nitrous use causes functional vitamin B12 deficiency and nerve damage (numbness, tingling, weakness). Symptoms sometimes recover only slowly.
